To be honest I wish I'd seen this earlier, but my outrage knows no bounds!
I just have a couple quick thoughts on this editorial piece. This abomination (to use Kuhner's language) of an article is so incredible it's hard to condense my sense of wonder and what the fuck down to something less than a several page deconstruction. So I'll just pick and choose some quotes and go from there.
Basically I'm going to ignore the “Obama's Culture of Death” and “OBAMACARE BAD RAWR” parts of this and focus on the anti-sexual liberty parts.
But really… attacks like this are attacks on the entire non-monogamous community as well as vanilla folk. Since a super-majority of Americans use and endorse contraception, all we really need to do is expose pieces and people like this for what they are and share it. I could post this article with no comment and get a huge response, but since I'm in a fighting mood… 🙂 (Quotes are in italics)
- “Free birth control has nothing to do with “protecting women’s health.” Rather, it is about consolidating the sexual revolution.”
Free birth control has everything to do with maintaining a woman's health, and a potential child's future health both physical and mental. There are all sorts of reasons someone may want to take birth control but lets stick with the “no unintended pregnancy” one for now. Having a child outside a stable relationship, having child when you have several, having a child when not financially able to take care of one are all good reasons for not having a child, but the only solution acceptable to fundamentalists is abstinence.
So, you sluts, if you don't want kids, just stop having sex. Sounds reasonable enough! After all, Any sexual activity not strictly for procreation is an abomination.
- “Contraception violates the natural moral order. It decouples sexual intercourse from its main purpose: procreation. It entrenches the hedonistic ethic that sex is about recreation and individual gratification.”
Except for that whole natural moral order thing, that sounds about right.
There's nothing natural about restricting sexuality to between one man and one woman, for life. No pre-marital sex, only post-marital sex for procreation purposes only is allowed. If you enjoy it that's sinful. This sounds terribly natural.
- “Moreover, subsidizing free birth control violates the conscience rights of devout Christians, orthodox Jews and Muslims. It compels them to have their hard-earned taxpayer dollars go toward funding behavior that their religious faiths condemn as sinful and an abomination”
And yet, my hard-earned taxpayer dollars go to subsidizing tax-free status for churches, synagogues, and mosques and for abstinence only education for children… Tough shit, how about we just drop all that silly tax-free and abstinence only education and I'll be glad to not have your money going to that silly family planning, women healthcare stuff.
Thanks Jeffrey T. Kuhner, I will definitely take this into consideration! Until then I'm a swinger and I'll keep exploring my own personal sexuality, with my wife, with other people, and continue down that CRAZY path of using condoms and pursuing a vasectomy.
