Do White Rocks In The Front Yard Mean Swingers?

22

There's a strange urban legend that seems to have popped up as of late, that white rocks in a house's front yard means the inhabitants of that house are swingers. The swinging community at large isn't sure where this rumor came from, but many say they've heard this themselves, and some have placed white rocks in their front yards to reaffirm their “secret code swinger status.”

In our research and discussion with many swingers (and a very unscientific survey of those swingers) we've found that only one in the group put white rocks in front of their house to indicate they were swingers.

Those who assert that this at least once was true also perpetuate the legend that swinging started on army bases, where men who were on the base “took care” of the wives of men who were not. (Presumably with their knowledge and support, or this is a very mean story.) The rumor then suggests that the houses of those who were in on this scheme had white rocks in front of them.

So, while it's POSSIBLE that the above paragraph is actually true, there's a lot of debate about it, and since no one really likes to talk all that much about their proclivities, let alone advertise them to the neighborhood with an identifiable symbol, we probably will never be able to tell the difference between those swingers with white rocks, and the regular people who just like white rocks, and those who use white rocks to edge their driveway, and those who use white rocks to define the edge of their property.

  1. I heard that when I first joined the Air Force years ago. I’ve also heard it was in the other branches as well. And I remember hearing about the painted rocks in front of the houses in base housing. So I believe there is some validity to that.

  2. Cooper, I have heard this is very common in the mid-west and especially in the Kansas City Region. I"ve heard that it started in the area after two guys went drinking and decided to have a party on their block and exchange wives. It's big among people in the financial sector.

  3. Many years ago we lived on base at Kirtland AFB, NM. As part of improving our yard we put in white rock and (GASP) a swing hanging from a tree branch. Wasn't long at all before we hear from several neighbors about what signal we were sending out. And that there had been a big scandal at another base about that thing…..

Maybe we should create a flag or house decoration…Big S? Can even have play designations – FS, SS, GG LOL
Sounds like a new product to develop.

  5. A similar myth I once heard about was in regards to those living on naval based. A wife would place a Tide detergent bottle in the front window if her husband was at sea and was lonely.

  6. Hmmmm.  Nobody in our neighborhood has white rocks, including us.  Maybe it’s because the HOA would fine anyone who steps out of line and tries to be individualistic. But, then again, we are the only swingers in the neighborhood…….that we know of.  But, that doesn’t mean we haven’t fooled around with at least a few of them.  😉

And of course, there is a thread on snopes about this – http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=39103

  7. We’ve got the white rocks, we’ve got the Garden Gnomes couple in a swing & we will be getting a Pineapple yard flag soon. These are all things that are rumored to be indicative of Swingers in our area. They probably really aren’t, but we find it funny nonetheless.

Wow I just bought property and found some white rocks on it so I decided to collect them and place them in my front yard. I’m not in that life style so what do I do?
